Exactly what do we do?
Our workmanship is of the very highest quality - check out the lists below to see why.
| What we do | Why we do it |
|---|---|
| Wash surfaces with sugar soap | to remove grease which can affect paint adhesion |
| Rub down with sandpaper | to smooth surfaces and provide key for paint |
| Hoover! | removes dust that can spoil the finish |
| Fill holes and cracks with filler | aesthetics, protection from moisture penetration |
| Remove door/window furniture (ironmongery) | just makes it a much tidier job |
| Spot prime any areas of filler or bare wood | to ensure subsequent coats of paint properly adhere, cover properly and give the proper finish |
| Caulk round all skirtings, architraves (door frames), window frames etc | enables the line where different colour paints meet to be straighter. Probably the biggest difference between a DIY job and a professional one |
| Apply one undercoat | fills small cracks, holes and imperfections, gives good colour base, and provides perfect surface to take gloss finish |
| Second undercoat if necessary | if one undercoat is not enough to cover the original colour |
| Apply one or two coats of Gloss (organic) | Really just a varnish or lacquer, this coat gives a hard, durable, water-repelling, washable, attractive finish |
| Clean windows | cos they’re dirty! to remove dust, and smear from washing down with sugar soap |
| What we do | Why we do it |
|---|---|
| Wash down with sugar soap | removing dirt, grease, traffic grime, and nicotine staining mean that the emulsion will stick properly |
| Rub down with sandpaper | smooths and provides good key for paint |
| Cracks repaired with filler | Improves aesthetics |
| Bare plaster and filler primed with diluted emulsion | means subsequent coats of paint will stick properly (undiluted paint on bare plaster can begin peeling within days of applying it.) |
| Caulk round ceiling line and where walls meet door frames, windows and skirting boards | it’s the ‘lines’ between different colours of paint that make a really good job, and caulking makes it easier to get really good lines |
| Two or three coats of emulsion | It’s almost always necessary to apply two coats of emulsion to walls and ceilings to ensure proper coverage |
| Third coat of emulsion | when necessary, normally when covering a strong colour with white, or if painting in silk emulsion which doesn’t cover quite so well |
When wallpapering with lining paper (a good remedy for rough walls or ceilings) or with patterned paper, we always strip old wallpaper first. Radiators are removed to enable the best job, and surfaces are sanded and filled prior to repapering.
